Scientists claim AI has the ability to give birth to AI without human intervention

Artificial intelligence models can now create smaller AI systems without the help of a human, according to research published Friday by a group of scientists who said the project was the first of its kind.

Essentially, larger AI models — like the kind that power ChatGPT — can create smaller, more specific AI applications that can be used in everyday life, a collaboration between Aizip Inc. and scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and several University of California campuses demonstrated. Those specialized models could help improve hearing aids, monitor oil pipelines and track endangered species.

“Right now, we’re using bigger models to build the smaller models, like a bigger brother helping [its smaller] brother to improve. That’s the first step towards a bigger job of self-evolving AI,” Yan Sun, CEO of the AI tech company Aizip, told Fox News. “This is the first step in the path to show that AI models can build AI models.”

Yubei Chen, one of the researchers, echoed Sun.

“The surprising thing we find is that, essentially, you can use the largest model to help you automatically design the smaller ones,” said Chen, a U.C. Davis professor and Aizip co-founder. “So in the future, we believe that these, the large and the small, they will collaborate together and then build a complete intelligence ecosystem.”

Models that can be spawned from AI include those capable of identifying human voices among ambient noise, monitoring pipeline data to proactively prevent integrity issues and analyzing satellite and ground-based sensor data to track wild animals, Yubei Chen, one of the researchers, told Fox News.

“Our technology is a breakthrough in the sense that for the first time, we have designed a fully automated pipeline,” he said. It “can design an AI model without human intervention in the process.”

“This month, we just demonstrated the first proof of concept such that one type of model can be automatically designed all the way from data generation to the model deployment and testing without human intervention,” Chen continued.

One device Sun and Chen demonstrated — a human activity tracker that uses AI to gather and analyze motion data — was housed in a chip smaller than a dime.

That sensor is an example of tiny machine learning, small AI systems that can be used in compact devices or spaces. Tiny machine learning capabilities are crucial for pervasive AI, the notion that nearly any object could become intelligent, Sun said.

“If we think about ChatGPT and tiny machine learning, they are on the two extremes of the spectrum of intelligence. The large models … reside in the cloud,” Chen told Fox News. “On the other hand, we are building the smallest models. They reside in things.”

Experts Warn of ‘Enormous’ Growing Threat to the US

Global public health experts are warning that the United States is not prepared for looming threats posed by tropical and insect-borne viruses.

At a two-day workshop this week at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, D.C., experts said arboviral threats, or mosquito- and tick-borne viruses, are spreading in non-tropical environments.

Tropical diseases such as malaria, Zika and dengue fever have all seen U.S. transmissions and outbreaks in recent years. Experts said increased globalization and climate change allow the tropical insects and diseases to thrive in southern, eastern and western U.S. states, especially.

The first U.S. cases of malaria in 20 years were reported in June. CDC spokesperson Kate Fowlie noted the response to those cases in Florida and Texas as a pivotal, recent example of halting the spread of a mosquito-transmitted disease.

“The CDC is working hard with its federal, territorial, state, and local partners to address the growing threat of vector-borne diseases,” Fowlie told Newsweek via email. “One recent example of the importance of this work is when CDC, state and local partners worked successfully together to help prevent ongoing transmission of malaria earlier this year. This effort underscores the importance of supporting efforts to prepare for, prevent and respond to vector-borne diseases.”

“If we don’t do anything, which is basically what we’re doing right now, it’s going to get worse,” Thomas Scott, a medical entomologist and professor emeritus at University of California, Davis, said during the workshop. “The damage from inaction is enormous, it’s unacceptable. It’s unethical.”

National Public Radio (NPR) reported on Friday that the U.S. has lost a lot of its ability to track insects. In 1927, every state had its own entomologist. Currently, only 16 states have an entomologist, according to Erin Staples, a medical epidemiologist with the CDC.

“That means the nation’s ability to monitor viruses like West Nile is sparse. We’re not getting great information because we haven’t maintained our infrastructure,” Staples told the conference.

Officials recently predicted record numbers of dengue fever infections by the end of the year. The chief scientist for the World Health Organization (WHO), Jeremy Farrar, has warned that the disease is expected to begin spreading into other, non-tropical parts of the world, including Europe, North America, and southern regions in Africa.

Developing out of an initial infection with the dengue virus, the disease can result in a high fever, headaches, vomiting, and prominent skin rashes. Also known as “breakbone fever,” dengue fever is also known to result in joint pain and muscle spasms.

iPhone 16 Pro Max vs iPhone 15 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is still fairly new, and while a new model won’t be available for the better part of year, you might already be wondering whether to buy or hold off for next year’s purported iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

It’s early days for iPhone 16 Pro Max rumors, given the handset isn’t expected until September 2024, but a number of leaks have already hinted at the kind of upgrades we can expect.

There’s one important caveat to mention before we begin, however. Last year, Apple was tipped to be launching an ‘Ultra’ variant of its iPhone 15. It didn’t happen, but Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman thinks it might be in store in 2024. It’s possible that it will replace the Pro Max, or be an even more premium model.

Whether or not that turns out to be the case, just be aware that these features could be for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the reported iPhone 16 Ultra or both.

The Pro Max model is already Apple’s largest smartphone by some distance, measuring 6.7 inches across the diagonal. But the company is apparently planning to make the 2024 Pro Max even larger, with a 6.9-inch display tipped.

If true, it will be interesting to see how much larger the phone is in the hand. In the past, Apple has managed to limit footprint increases by slimming down the bezels, but with the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s frame coming in at just 1.55mm, it’s hard to see how much thinner they can get. Ross Young, the display analyst who first tipped the screen size increase suggests we may see an aspect ratio adjustment to compensate.

We also might get a bit more screen to play with thanks to a shrinking of the cut out used for Dynamic Island. A report from January suggested that 2024’s iPhone 16 Pro models would move Face ID under the screen, leaving just a single cut-out for the front-facing camera. Though that might be something to look forward to in 2025 instead.

iPhone 16 Pro Max vs iPhone 15 Pro Max: A brand-new button The current batch of Pro iPhones introduced a brand-new button to replace the Mute switch. Now Apple is reportedly looking to introduce a second button, referred to as the ‘Capture Button’ by leakers.

By the sounds of it, this will be a useful physical shutter button for the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s camera. What it will do outside the app remains to be seen, but it will apparently be capacitive rather than a physical button.
