  • iPhone 15: USB-C, Action Button and more

iPhone 15: USB-C, Action Button and more

As September 12’s Apple event rolls around, the world awaits with bated breath for the reveal of the iPhone 15. With rumors and speculations swirling around, we’ve gathered some of the most credible reports to give you a sneak peek into what could be the biggest upgrades in this year’s model.

    1. USB-C brings one cable to charge them all

One of the most talked-about features of the iPhone 15 is the reported switch from the Lightning port to the more universal USB-C. This change aligns with the European Union’s mandate for electronic devices to use USB-C connectors by 2024. By adopting this standard, iPhone users will be able to use the same charging cable for their MacBook, iPad, and non-Apple accessories like cameras and headphones. However, it would also mean that your existing Lightning cables will no longer work for your iPhone. Keep an eye out during the event to see if Apple announces any upgrades in charging speed or data transfer rates with this shift.

    2. Periscope camera catches up to Samsung

The camera system on the iPhone 15 Pro is nothing short of extraordinary. With multiple focal lengths and a 48MP main camera, you have the flexibility to capture stunning photos from any angle. The improved portrait mode automatically captures depth information, allowing you to add an artful blur effect to your photos or adjust it later in the Photos app.

For those who love capturing videos, the iPhone 15 Pro offers spatial video capture, allowing you to shoot magical videos and relive them on Apple Vision Pro. And with the 5x telephoto zoom, you can now take sharper close-ups from a distance, capturing every detail with precision.

Apple has also introduced the all-new Action button, providing quick access to your favorite features. Whether you want to launch the camera for a spontaneous selfie or record a voice memo, the Action button is at the ready.

Connectivity is taken to new heights with USB 3 support and Wi-Fi 6E, offering faster data transfer speeds and lightning-fast wireless connections. And with Precision Finding via Ultra Wideband technology, you can easily locate your friends even in crowded spaces.

Battery life is always a concern for smartphone users, but the iPhone 15 Pro has you covered. With amazing all-day battery life and fast, efficient wireless charging capabilities, you can stay connected for longer without worrying about running out of power.

Safety is also a top priority for Apple, and the iPhone 15 Pro comes equipped with emergency features like Roadside Assistance and Crash Detection that can potentially save lives in critical situations.

In addition to its impressive hardware, the iPhone 15 Pro runs on iOS 17, which introduces exciting new features such as Contact Poster, NameDrop, and Live Stickers. These additions allow for more personalized communication and creative expression.

With its remarkable features and sleek design, the iPhone 15 Pro is set to elevate your smartphone experience to new heights. Pre-orders start on September 15th, so mark your calendars and get ready to upgrade to the future of mobile technology.

  • Scania’s testing a hybrid truck powered by the sun

Scania’s testing a hybrid truck powered by the sun

A groundbreaking hybrid truck, fitted with solar panels across its trailer, is under testing on public highways. This cutting-edge vehicle is the product of a two-year research collaboration involving Scania, Uppsala University, Eksjö Maskin & Truck, Midsummer, Ernsts Express, and Dalakraft. The solar power generated by the truck significantly reduces operating costs and local emissions.

Stas Krupenia, Head of the Research Office at Scania, expressed excitement about the project’s potential for sustainability in transport: “Our aim at Scania is to lead the transition towards a sustainable transport system. This unique usage of solar panels to power a truck is a significant step in reducing emissions in the transportation sector.”

The research project aims to study the amount of solar energy generated and the corresponding decrease in carbon emissions. The researchers also aim to understand how trucks can interact with the power grid and predict outcomes if multiple such trucks are connected to it.

“The collaboration of academia and industry in this project is truly exciting. We are eager to see the results from this unique truck,” says Professor Erik Johansson of Uppsala University.

The truck’s 18-metre trailer is almost completely covered with solar panels, allowing for an extended driving range of up to 5,000 kilometers annually in Sweden. In sunnier countries like Spain, the solar energy and driving range could potentially double.

The project also explores lightweight tandem solar cells that combine Midsummer’s solar cells and new perovskite solar cells. These cells have a higher efficiency in converting sunlight to electricity, potentially doubling the current energy generation.

Erik Olsson, Head of Corporate Development at Midsummer, believes that their solar panels are well suited for commercial vehicles: “We envision a significant reduction in heavy vehicle emissions through electrification powered by solar panels.”

The project also examined the potential impact of charging on the electricity grid and the possibility of selling excess energy. However, Sverker Ericsson from Dalakraft noted that legislation is currently unclear on this issue.

The truck will now be operated on public roads by Ernsts Express AB. The hybrid vehicle is a 560 horsepower plug-in hybrid with an 18-metre trailer covered by 100 square meters of flexible solar panels. The batteries have a total capacity of 300 kWh, allowing the vehicle to deliver an estimated 8,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) annually when operated in Sweden. The project was partly funded by government innovation agency Vinnova.

  • Sun’s power could be the key to unlocking mysteries of our deep oceans

Sun’s power could be the key to unlocking mysteries of our deep oceans

The ocean, an enigmatic world that covers over 70% of our planet, yet remains largely unexplored, continues to beguile human curiosity. Despite our remarkable technological progress, we’ve managed to map only around five percent of the world’s oceans. It’s a realm shrouded in mystery, and our quest to uncover its secrets has led researchers to an innovative, green solution—solar power.

A recently published research paper in Nature Photonics, titled “A dive into underwater solar cells,” delves into the potential of utilizing solar power for underwater vehicles. The work is spearheaded by Jason A. Röhr and André Taylor from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NYU Tandon.

    Solar Power: A Shining Solution

Various marine technologies like wave and tidal power have shown promise, but their application is often limited by location dependency and lack of portability. In contrast, solar power provides a ubiquitous and powerful energy source, capable of reaching depths up to 50 meters.

The researchers at NYU Tandon have explored the potential of solar cells for underwater applications. They highlight successful implementations in powering Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and communication devices while addressing the challenges inherent to this integration.

    Overcoming Obstacles

A significant challenge lies in the design of existing silicon solar technology, which isn’t ideal for underwater use. Beyond the general issues posed by moisture and salt content, silicon solar cells are optimized to absorb red and infrared light—wavelengths that don’t penetrate water effectively.

The team suggests alternative technologies like gallium indium phosphide (GaInP) and cadmium telluride (CdTe) as they exhibit higher efficiency in oceanic conditions. Next-generation solar cells, such as organic and perovskite solar cells (OSCs and PSCs), are also under consideration.

Another challenge is biofouling—the accumulation of organic substances on the cells, which obstructs light access and impedes the photovoltaic process. This buildup also affects submerged vehicles by increasing weight and generating hydrodynamic resistance.

    Innovative Solutions

The research team has addressed these challenges with practical solutions. They’ve used LED lights to simulate the underwater light spectrum during testing, thus eliminating the need for actual water.

Their experiments have shown that silicon-based solar cells perform better at shallow depths, while other cell types are more efficient below two meters.

While these specially designed underwater solar cells are still in their infancy, the research marks an important step towards groundbreaking technologies that could revolutionize our exploration of the oceans.

Our oceans are a vast, uncharted frontier, but with the power of the sun guiding us, we might just illuminate its enigmatic depths. The future of ocean exploration is brighter than ever, thanks to these remarkable advancements in solar power technology.

  • The CPU Explained: What You Must Know.

The CPU Explained: What You Must Know.

The world of computers and electronics can seem like a maze for newcomers, with jargon and acronyms popping up left, right, and center. Among the terms, “CPU” or the “central processing unit” is one that stands out prominently. But what is a CPU, and why does it matter? Let’s dive in.

Understanding the CPU: A Quick Rundown

Akin to the brain in a human body, the CPU is the brains of your electronic devices. Whether it’s your computer, smartwatch, or thermostat, the CPU is what processes and executes the given instructions. Its pivotal role becomes evident when you consider that the performance of a device often hinges on its CPU.

    CPU’s Composition and Functioning

The CPU isn’t a standalone player in the vast arena of electronic components. It coexists with other parts like memory (where data is temporarily stored) and the graphics card (responsible for video and graphics displays). The CPU gets its power from billions of microscopic transistors etched onto a chip. These transistors, acting as minuscule switches, handle computations to execute programs. The smaller these transistors, the faster and more efficient the CPU becomes. A phenomenon evident from the continuous evolution and enhancement in CPU speeds, often attributed to Moore’s Law.

Today, computers have dedicated CPUs that handle an array of functions, while mobile devices usually deploy a system on a chip (SoC), bundling the CPU with other vital components.

    The Role of a CPU

At its most basic, a CPU executes instructions. This execution undergoes three stages: fetching the instruction, decoding it, and then finally executing it. The tasks range from basic arithmetic to more complex functions like loading an operating system or playing a video. The CPU also coordinates with other hardware, directing them as necessary, ensuring seamless device operation.

It is suitable for all mobile phones with a magnetic wireless charging function. Mobile phones without wireless charging functions need to be used with a wireless charging receiver!

Evolving CPU Architecture: More Cores, Faster Speeds

Over time, CPUs have transformed dramatically. Initially, they had just a single core. Today, to boost efficiency, CPUs come with multiple cores, enabling them to handle numerous tasks simultaneously. This multi-core approach translates to enhanced multitasking and performance.

The clock speed of a CPU, measured in gigahertz (GHz), determines how swiftly it can execute instructions. While an essential metric, it’s not the sole determinant of a CPU’s performance. Often, newer processors, even with a lower clock speed, outperform their older counterparts because of advanced technologies they integrate.

How Much Should You Spend on a CPU?

Budgeting for a CPU depends on your unique needs. Casual users might not need to venture beyond the $200-$300 bracket. On the other hand, avid gamers and professionals dealing with resource-intensive tasks might want to invest more. A good approach is to look at recent generations of CPUs rather than the latest, often pricier, releases. For instance, Intel’s 12th or 13th-generation chips or AMD’s third and fourth-generation Ryzen CPUs would serve most users well.

Is the CPU Really That Important?

Although the CPU isn’t the only component influencing system performance, it’s undeniably crucial. Gold Tattoos for Cells? Why Scientists Are Tattooing Cells with Gold.

Scientists have made a significant breakthrough in the field of integrating electronic devices with human cells. Using a technique called nanoimprint lithography, they have successfully printed patterns of gold nanodots and nanowires onto living mouse embryo fibroblast cells. This development marks an important first step towards adding complex circuitry to living tissues.

The fabrication technique, developed by engineer David Gracias from Johns Hopkins University, has incredible potential for health applications. Imagine having sensors that can remotely monitor and control the state of individual cells and the environment surrounding them in real time. This technology could potentially lead to the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases by tracking the health of isolated cells, rather than waiting for damage to entire organs.

However, integrating electronics with human biology has posed significant challenges. One major hurdle is the incompatibility between living tissue and the manufacturing techniques traditionally used to construct electronics. Many of these techniques involve harsh chemicals, high temperatures, and vacuums that can destroy living tissue. Gracias and his team have overcome this obstacle by using a technique called nanoimprint lithography, which involves imprinting nanoscale patterns onto a material, in this case, gold.

The process begins by printing nanoscale gold onto a silicon wafer coated with a polymer. The polymer is then dissolved, allowing the pattern to be transferred onto thin films of glass that are treated with a biological compound called cysteamine and coated with a hydrogel. The pattern is then removed from the glass and transferred onto fibroblast cells. Finally, the hydrogel is dissolved, leaving the gold bonded to the cells.

The researchers have successfully used this technique to attach gold nanowire arrays to ex vivo rat brains. The ability to attach complex nanopatterns to living cells without causing cell death is a significant achievement. This opens up possibilities for developing complicated electronics, such as electrodes, antennas, and circuits, that can be integrated into living tissues, hydrogels, and other soft materials that are incompatible with harsher fabrication methods.

The researchers believe that combining nanopatterning with various classes of materials and standard microfabrication techniques can lead to the development of new cell culture substrates, biohybrid materials, bionic devices, and biosensors. The possibilities for this research are vast, and it represents an exciting step forward in the field of integrating electronic devices with living cells.

5 Quick Ways to Make Space on Your iPhone

Is your iPhone running out of storage space? Don’t worry, there are several simple tricks you can try to free up some much-needed space and optimize the performance of your device. Here are five quick ways to make space on your iPhone:

    1. Delete Unused Apps: Start by going through your apps and uninstalling those that you no longer use. You’d be surprised at how much space this can free up. To do this, go to your Settings, select “General,” then “iPhone Storage,” and review the list of apps. Tap on any app you want to delete and select “Delete App.”

    2. Clear App Cache: Instead of uninstalling apps, you can also clear their cache to free up space. This is especially useful for apps that accumulate a lot of cache data over time. To clear app cache, go to your Settings, select the app you want to clear the cache for, and look for the option to reset the cache.

    3. Delete Photos and Texts: Photos and text messages can take up a significant amount of space on your iPhone. Go through your camera roll and delete any duplicate or unnecessary photos. You can also consider using cloud storage services like Google Photos to store your photos instead of keeping them on your phone. Additionally, delete older text message conversations that you no longer need.

    4. Be Mindful of Downloads: Be cautious about downloading large files, such as music albums or audiobooks, as they can quickly eat up your storage space. Instead, consider streaming music or using cloud-based services for storing media files.

    5. Clear Browser Cache: Your web browser also stores data in its cache, which can take up some space on your device. To clear your browser cache, go to your browser’s settings and look for the option to clear history and data.

By following these five tips, you should be able to free up some valuable storage space on your iPhone and improve its overall performance. Enjoy a clutter-free and optimized device!
